Understanding Scholar Levels

Scholar levels do not begin until students enter the 8-12th grade TIP courses following their 7th grade talent search results. The test report returned to families after students take their Baylor TIP test will explain which scholar level your student has achieved. This helps you and your student select courses that are at the appropriate level of rigor to be challenging and interesting.

Baylor TIP Scholar Levels

Baylor TIP Scholar recognition celebrates students who demonstrate advanced academic ability and a readiness to take on challenges beyond their current grade level.

Through above-level testing, students have the opportunity to demonstrate what they know and can do when presented with more challenging academic material. Their performance may earn recognition as a Baylor TIP Scholar, Baylor TIP Green Scholar, or Baylor TIP Gold Scholar.

Since 2023, more than 3000 gifted students have tested for Baylor TIP. The students designated as Baylor TIP Scholars scored among the top 50% of those gifted students. Additional distinctions were awarded to the highest performing students, with those in the top 25% designated as Green Scholars, and those in the top 10% as Gold Scholars.

Baylor TIP Scholar

Baylor TIP Scholars demonstrate a strong ability to succeed with academic material beyond their current grade level. This recognition celebrates students who are ready to stretch their thinking, tackle challenging concepts, and demonstrate knowledge and skills beyond typical grade-level expectations.

Baylor TIP Green Scholar

Baylor TIP Green Scholars demonstrate an especially strong level of performance on above-level assessments. They show a notable ability to understand challenging material, apply their knowledge in new ways, and rise to increasingly advanced academic challenges. Green Scholar recognition celebrates students whose performance demonstrates particularly advanced academic readiness.

Baylor TIP Gold Scholar

Baylor TIP Gold Scholars demonstrate an exceptional level of performance on above-level assessments. They stand out for their ability to engage successfully with highly challenging academic material and demonstrate remarkable readiness for advanced learning opportunities. Gold Scholar recognition celebrates students who demonstrate a strong capacity to thrive when given opportunities to learn well beyond the typical grade-level curriculum.

What Do the Scholar Levels Mean?

All three levels represent significant academic achievement. Baylor TIP Scholar recognition begins where typical grade-level assessments often provide less information about a student's advanced capabilities. Above-level testing gives high-achieving students an opportunity to demonstrate what they know and can do on more challenging academic material.

The Green and Gold designations recognize increasingly exceptional levels of performance within this already high-performing group. These distinctions help Baylor TIP identify students who may benefit from increasingly advanced academic challenge and talent development opportunities.

Scholar Levels and Summer Programming

Currently, in our 8th to 12th grade summer programming, we are offering two levels of academic courses: Baylor TIP Academy courses and Baylor TIP Lyceum courses. Designed specifically for Baylor TIP Green Scholars and Baylor TIP Gold Scholars, Lyceum courses focus on more advanced material and will move at a faster pace than the Baylor TIP Academy courses. Baylor TIP Scholars who begin with an Academy course and do well in it may take a Lyceum level course the following year.
